The main purpose of the defense is to force or deceive the enemy into attacking under unfavorable circumstances, defeat or destroy his attack, and regain the initiative for the offense. As part of the SBCT, the battalion may defend, delay, withdraw, counterattack, or perform security operations or economy of force tasks. Even within the conduct of the SBCT defense, the battalion exploits opportunities to conduct offensive operations within its area of operations to deprive the enemy of the initiative and create the conditions to assume the offensive.
